Tips for good oral health with clear aligners and braces

Orthodontic treatments, such as clear aligners and braces in Twyford can help straighten your teeth and enhance your confident smile.

If you have braces or aligners, dentists and orthodontists recommend brushing your teeth after each meal to remove food particles and prevent the formation of plaque.

A good oral hygiene regime will help ensure that your teeth are strong and healthy throughout your orthodontic treatment.

Here are some tips from the team at Shine Dental and Facial in Twyford to ensure good hygiene with braces:

Brush teeth after every meal

We advise patients to brush their teeth after every meal or snack since tiny food particles can easily get trapped in your braces. Food trapped inside your braces may increases your risk of dental problems, such as tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath.  Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, electric toothbrush, or interdental brush and rinse your mouth with water which will loosen any trapped food particles.

Floss after eating

Flossing will help ensure that food particles are dislodged. If you find flossing difficult use a floss threader, gently pulling the floss up to your gum line and moving up and down.

Avoid sticky foods

Avoid eating sticky foods, such as bread and gums as they can easily get stuck in your braces and are difficult to remove, which can have damaging effects on your tooth enamel and increases the risk of tooth decay.

Be prepared

Keep a small bag with you with brush, tooth paste, mouthwash, and a small mirror to keep up with your oral health routine when you are out and about.

Clean your aligners

Make sure you clean your aligners regularly to keep them clear and free from food and plaque residue. Here are 6 ways you can clean your invisible aligners, ask our team for advice:

  • Clean aligners with gentle soap instead of toothpaste.
  • Soak aligners in baking soda mixture.
  • Soak aligners in vinegar and water mixture.
  • Soak aligners in hydrogen peroxide and water mixture.
  • Soak aligners in clear retainer cleaner solution.
  • Use cleaning crystals to remove plaque from your invisible aligners.
